BibSpider – Info-Networking for Libraries
A small specialist publishing house for international information transfer

The present situation:
Information and Knowledge are important components of the international community and their future political, economic and cultural success. Modern democracies expect their citizens to continue in education and training through lifelong learning. Libraries and information agencies are providing the framework for this task as important intermediaries in the future knowledgebased society.
Not all countries are able to provide sufficient resources to prepare for this new focus. Many libraries cannot cope with growing user demand. As the funding of public and academic libraries is cut or withheld then institutions are closed or private ownership is considered.
Curtailment in collection development is justified by referring to the internet which appears to render provision of books and journals unnecessary. However, various studies illustrate that the internet is not used systematically and searchers are often inadequately trained.

The Mission:
Present information structures have to be developed and used more effectively in order to contribute to the future political, economic and cultural environment. Thus information professionals and librarians have to build strategies and alliances. They have to foresee and prepare for future developments.

International future projects have to be anticipated or complemented by national projects. German libraries and information institutions can play an important role in these projects, this contributes not only to German interests but also to international interests in building a worldwide information society.

Our Answer:
