Digitalization - International Projects in Libraries and Archives
Digitalisieren - Internationale Projekte in Bibliotheken und Archiven

The authors examine digitalization projects in international libraries, institutions, archives and by private providers for information services. They describe the environment, organisation and the difficulties involved when the projects are put into practice. By realising these projects their results form a kind of guideline for all who are occupied with the administration and organisation of such digitalization projects:
- The digitalization centre of the Academy of Sciences, Prague Czech Republic enabled the salvage of collections being damaged by the great flood some years ago.
- Digitalization is requiring new protection: About the growing control of the information users by the providers of content. By D. Böhner and D. Lutze.
- Digitalization holdings of journals in the framework of co-operation projects of the Finnish and the Estonian National Library as well about a German Estonian Project of the City Archive of Tallinn and the Herder Institute Marburg, enabling access to valuable archive material.
- The virtual library of the holdings of the old University of Frankfurt/Oder - a unique project introduced by Thomas Jäger.
- The municipal library of Shanghai establishes a digital library providing access to the cultural heritage. Some political aspects about promoting culture.
- Introducing the Requiem Data Base (Italy) and that of archiving public polls (USA)- new resources for research are visible and accessible.
- Technical and technological challenges are involved by creating the appropriate appliances for scanning (Stephan Tratter) and for the conversion of historical collections of memory institutions (Claus Gravenhorst) .

For librarians, researchers, teachers, students and for all those who would like to engage themselves in international digitalization projects.
